'There Is a Fountain' by Timothy Seaman on solo Hammered Dulcimer
www.timothyseaman.com/ A new friend, Steve Cohen of Connecticut, took this video at the Williamsburg General Store this evening of my arrangement of the Appalachian folk hymn 'There Is a Fountain'. Thank you, Steve!
I wish my name tag were straighter, but the performance turned out pretty well.
The studio recording from 2007 is on the album Cleansing Fountain:

'Take My Life and Let It Be' on hammered dulcimer, flute, and guitar by Timothy Seaman
Переглядів 502Місяць тому
www.timothyseaman.com/ For a recessional at Providence Classical School's graduation ceremony, I made this somewhat casual 'jamming' recording of the great classic hymn written in 1874 by Frances R. Havergal, since I can't be there this year to play it live on hammered dulcimer as in other years. Congratulations, graduates! The words: 1 Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee. Tak...
'Ave Maria' by Bach and Gounod, as a duet on hammered dulcimer and flute

www.timothyseaman.com/ An informal video of Timothy Seaman's unique duet arrangement of this glorious piece: J.S. Bach composed the original part for the keyboard, Prelude No. 1 in C from The Well-Tempered Clavier, in 1722; then in 1853 Charles Gounod added the introduction and one chord about 2/3 through, improvised a melody, and called it 'Meditation on the First Piano Prelude by Bach', inten...
The Appalachian shape-note folk hymn 'Saw Ye My Savior' on hammered dulcimer by Timothy Seaman

www.timothyseaman.com/ I fell in love with this obscure song when I found it in an old shape-note book around 1986, and have wanted to arrange it ever since. Here's a first version on solo hammered dulcimer. Hopefully there will be a careful studio audio version with more of an ensemble before too long. The style reminds me of Stephen Foster; some of my chord choices remind me of contemporary S...

www.timothyseaman.com/ This striking melody I found in old shape-note books is my favorite setting for the famous words by the master poet Isaac Watts from 1707. Here I've just played through the melody (with some variations) as a first try in preparation for a carefully arranged audio track to be done later. (This is a redwood and walnut McSpadden baritone dulcimer tuned ADG.) The words are so...

www.timothyseaman.com/ An informal video of the current status of a new arrangement I'm working on for the wonderful old gospel hymn written in 1855 by Joseph Scriven. Eventually I hope to have an audio single online with a self-arranged-and-performed ensemble! The lyrics: What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O w...

    When I hear the dulcimer played I think of my sweet cousin Elaine who fell in loved with the Smokey Mountains and the culture of its people. So much so that she brought a dulcimer and learned. to play it. She died many years ago. If there is a heaven I'm sure she's up there playing the dulcimer. I miss you Elaine.

      I've always thought the power in this song was really ironic: a simple, childlike gentleness in referring to horrific crisis involving vicious enemies. It speaks to the time I'm in right now. Blessed be the Lord, who has not given us to be torn by their teeth!

    Very helpful. They recommend on my trail dulcimer G D G ( like the Strumstick ), was having trouble keeping it in tune. Went down to Chanzy tuning ( Tuva ) F C F, it keeps falling out of that so ready to try D A D and see if it stays.

    I'm not entirely sure about the usefulness of learning chords whwen it comes to the dulcimer. Whenever I have wanted to play something, I have bought or downloaded the tablature which tells you which strings and frets to play. You learn the fingering and the rhythm and you play the song. I don't know of any music for the dulcimer which tells you the musical notation as to what chord it is and you go from there. You get the sheet music and the tablature for the finger placement, as you were demonstrating. Then, off you go to playing a new song. The names of the strings are: bass, drone and melody. Not top, middle and bottom. And you can get by with one melody string.

    • @robinbaylor2672
      @robinbaylor2672 2 місяці тому

      Learning chords lets you play something without tablature, like if you were playing along with a friend who only had guitar music.
